What’s an average WPM?
Most adults type somewhere around 35 to 40 WPM. Hitting 60 puts you comfortably above average, and 80+ is the kind of speed you see from programmers, writers and competitive typists. Phone keyboards usually land at about half your desktop speed.
How the score works
We count the characters in the sentence, divide by five to get words, scale that by your accuracy, and divide by the time you took. So a fast run full of typos won’t beat a slightly slower clean one.
Getting faster
Learn to type without looking at the keys. It feels slower at first, but your fingers quickly memorize where everything is. Ten focused minutes a day will do more than an occasional hour-long session.
