Hit start and allow microphone access, and a live meter shows how loud the incoming sound is. Say “testing, testing” and you will know right away whether the mic is on and picking you up clearly. Record a short clip and play it back to catch hiss, echo or muffled audio.
The meter isn’t moving
First, click the lock icon next to the address bar and make sure the microphone is allowed. On Windows, go to Settings › Privacy › Microphone and allow apps to use it; on a Mac, check System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone for your browser. Also look for a mute key or switch on your laptop or headset.
More than one mic?
With a headset, a webcam and a built-in mic all connected, the wrong one often gets picked. After granting access, choose the mic you want from the list. It is a quick way to figure out which device is live before a video call.
Too quiet or too loud
Normal speech filling roughly half the meter is about right. If it barely moves, raise the input volume in your system sound settings. If it is constantly maxed out in red, lower the input level or move back from the mic a little.

- Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
- No. Audio is processed entirely in your browser, and the clip disappears when you close the tab.
- Does it work on phones?
- Yes. Recent mobile Chrome and Safari both work once you allow microphone access.
